Claddagh Rings

The Claddagh ring is still, after so many years, an extremely popular piece of jewelry. Women, men, and teenagers alike can be seen wearing this ring in silver or gold, with or without gemstones. The traditional Claddagh ring is a fairly simple figure, with two hands clutching a heart wearing a crown. Today there are several variations of the traditional ring, and the symbol itself can be represented in other forms of jewelry.

Funny enough, although people from all over the world love this symbol, few actually know the real meaning behind it. I remember purchasing a sterling silver Claddagh ring at a jewelry store in SoHo (New York City) a long time ago and the woman selling it had no idea how one was supposed to wear it, or what it symbolized. This was shocking to me because the symbolism behind this ring is the most important part!

Here is some history behind the Claddagh ring:

  • The Claddagh ring's design originated in the 17th century during the reign of Queen Mary II.
  • The name "Claddagh" comes from a Irish fishing village located just outside of Galway.
  • The two hands symbolize friendship, the heart symbolizes love, and the crown symbolizes loyalty.
  • When given as a gift, the ring literally means, "let love and friendship reign."
  • When the ring is worn on the right hand with the heart facing outward, this indicates that the person wearing it is not in a serious relationship, or literally, "their heart is open."
  • When the ring is worn on the right hand with the heart facing inward, this indicates that the person is in a relationship or literally that, "someone has captured their heart."
  • When the ring is worn on the left hand ring finger facing outward, this usually indicates that the wearer is engaged.
  • When the ring is worn on the left hand ring finger facing inward, this means that the ring's owner is married.
